Profile
After learning printmaking at the University of Montana, I learned ceramics from my father, a master potter. The firing process has a serendipitous and unpredictable nature. As I learned this deeply I became interested in the enormous range of color and flow of the glaze.
Finding inspiration from the wall slabs which I worked on, I began to make monotypes. Monotypes, like the glazing and firing process, is a method of art making which benefits from serendipitous form and color.
Currently, I’m creating monotypes at my printmaking studio in Ome, Tokyo.
The method of transferring a monotype, as well as making the chemistry of a glaze through firing, are both intentional, but they have a possibility to create something new and beyond the imagination.
I cherish the sense of amazement I feel every time I find this serendipitous beauty and I will continue expressing with this joy.
Monotype
Monotype is a method of printmaking where printing ink or oil paint is applied directly to a matrix, usually acrylic, glass, or metal, and then transferred to a surface, usually paper.
Unlike other types of prints, due to the nature of the monotype process, only one print can be made from each artwork, so each monotype is a unique piece of art.
